Our 2008 banner

2008 was the 125th anniversary of the congregation of St Martin’s in the Gorgie Dalry area. The church was originally established as a mission station from St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral in Palmerston Place. Originally the church was at the bottom of Ardmillian Terrace, but in the 1980s, the church building needed too much maintenance to make its future viable. The congregation sold the ground and bought the current building 100 yds along the Dalry Road from the Baptist Church.

The congregation has celebrated many anniversaries over the years. For the centenary, the mural behind the altar was painted mostly by the youth group; for the 110th anniversary, the congregation all cross-stiched squares with symbols of themselves which then were sewn together to make an altar frontal. …. In 2008 we made a banner which spanned the space behind the altar, it was made up with hand and foot prints from the whole congregation, as we all joined together in community along the path of the cross.

In 2004, the Presbytery of Edinburgh (Church of Scotland) drew up a Presbytery Plan which grouped the parish churches of St Colm’s and St Michael’s in conversation following the induction of their ministers in 2005.  In 2006, St Martin’s joined the grouping and in 2009, the group was renamed “Partner Churches” and was enlarged to include Gorgie Parish.

Our life together, thus far, has centred on worship, study, prayer and co-operation strengthening the bonds between us, deepening our understanding of each other’s life, drawing us closer together as we continue to explore the nature of our district and our calling to serve in Christ’s name.

On 21 March 2010 we formalised our relationship with the signing of a covenant agreement between the four churches as we seek to honour our calling to worship, ministry and service in this place and at this time.  Please see our  covenant text (pdf) here.

In 2010 we appointed a fundraiser to help us with funds for the next stage of our journey as we embark on a vision for a community resource centre in the main church building – a resource for community groups in Gorgie and Dalry.  This is a major undertaking for the congregation and its partners in the community – please see here for more details.
